The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
Satisfy your inner culture vulture at Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine and Toji. Step off the beaten path and head to Tofuku-ji Temple and Eikando Zenrinji Temple. Get out of town with these interesting Kyoto side-trips: Hikone Castle (in Hikone) and Atsuta Jingu Shrine (in Nagoya). There's much more to do: contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Jojakkoji Temple, contemplate the long history of Kitano Tenmangu Shrine, make a trip to Kiyomizu-dera Temple, and stop by Pontocho District.

Satisfy your inner culture vulture at Koyasan Okunoin and Cup Noodle Museum Osaka Ikeda. Deepen your sense of the past at sights like Horyu-ji Temple and Sumiyoshi Taisha Shrine. Change things up with these side-trips from Osaka: Kashihara Jingu (in Kashihara), Sakurai (Hase-dera Temple & Omiwa Shrine) and Kobe (Arima Onsen & Kawasaki Good Times World).
