Sitting at the foot of Mount Fuji, Hakone-machi has become a popular retreat from Tokyo for locals and tourists alike.
Get ready for a full day of sightseeing on the 27th (Mon): explore the striking landscape of Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park, view the masterpieces at Hakone Craft House, then contemplate the long history of Oyama Afuri Shrine, and finally steep yourself in history at Daiyuzan Saijoji Temple (Doryoson).

Traveling by combination of train and bus from Tokyo to Hakone-machi takes 1.5 hours. Alternatively, you can drive; or take a bus. Traveling from Tokyo in April, expect nights in Hakone-machi to be about the same, around 13°C, while days are slightly colder, around 15°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 28th (Tue) so you can travel to Kyoto.

The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
Visit Kinpusenji Temple and Omiwa Shrine for their historical value. Satisfy your inner culture vulture at Kyoto Gyoen National Garden and Otagi Nenbutsu-ji Temple. Change things up with these side-trips from Kyoto: Sai Shrine (in Sakurai), Kashihara Jingu (in Kashihara) and Shuonan Ikkyuji Temple (in Kyotanabe). There's lots more to do: take in the spiritual surroundings of Muroji Temple, contemplate the long history of Honen-in, don't miss a visit to Yasakanoto, and tour the pleasant surroundings at Daitoku-ji Temple.

Traveling from Hakone-machi in April, you will find days in Kyoto are somewhat warmer (22°C), and nights are about the same (11°C).
