The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
Head to Dotombori District and Nishiki Market Shopping Districtfor some retail therapy. Visit Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine and Kinkaku-ji for their historical value. Get out of town with these interesting Kyoto side-trips: Nara (Todaiji Temple Cultural Center, Nara Park, &more). There's much more to do: steep yourself in history at Kiyomizu-dera Temple, make a trip to Nijo Castle, take in nature's colorful creations at Katsura Imperial Villa, and contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Sanjusangendo Temple.
