Named for the Quetzal bird--one of Guatemala's national symbols--Quetzaltenango once included the territories controlled by K'iche' Mayans, a pre-Columbian tribe eventually supplanted by Spanish conquistadores.
Start off your visit on the 28th (Sat): contemplate the geological forces at Santa Maria Volcano, then pause for some serene contemplation at Catedral del Espiritu Santo, then take in the architecture and atmosphere at La Ermita de la Concepcion (La Conquistadora), and finally pause for some serene contemplation at San Andres Xecul. Keep things going the next day: contemplate the waterfront views at Laguna Chicabal and then explore the striking landscape at Fuentes Georginas.

An island town, capital of the landlocked region of Peten, attractive Flores features pleasant architecture that complements the shimmering appearance of the surrounding lake.
When in Flores, make a side trip to see Tikal in Tikal National Park, approximately 1h 15 min away. And it doesn't end there: look for all kinds of wild species at Estacion Biologica Las Guacamayas, delve into the distant past at Parque arqueologico uaxactun, and pause for some serene contemplation at Catedral de Flores.

Getting from Antigua to Flores by combination of shuttle and flight takes about 3 hours. Other options: take a shuttle; or drive.
