Named for the Quetzal bird--one of Guatemala's national symbols--Quetzaltenango once included the territories controlled by K'iche' Mayans, a pre-Columbian tribe eventually supplanted by Spanish conquistadores.
Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Santa Maria Volcano and La Ermita de la Concepcion (La Conquistadora). Get outdoors at Laguna Chicabal and Fuentes Georginas. Go for a jaunt from Quetzaltenango to Retalhuleu to see Xetulul Theme Park about 1h 20 min away. It doesn't end there: pause for some serene contemplation at Catedral del Espiritu Santo and make a trip to Central Plaza.

Guatemala City to Quetzaltenango is an approximately 1.5-hour bus ride. You can also drive. Plan for slightly colder temperatures traveling from Guatemala City in June, with highs in Quetzaltenango at 24°C and lows at 13°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 29th (Sat) to allow enough time to drive to San Marcos La Laguna.

Expect somewhat warmer evenings in Antigua when traveling from San Marcos La Laguna in June, with lows around 19°C. Cap off your sightseeing on the 4th (Thu) early enough to catcht the bus to Coban.
