Named for the Quetzal bird--one of Guatemala's national symbols--Quetzaltenango once included the territories controlled by K'iche' Mayans, a pre-Columbian tribe eventually supplanted by Spanish conquistadores.
Your inner history buff will appreciate Chichi Cemetery and La Ermita de la Concepcion (La Conquistadora). Get a sense of the local culture at Iglesia de San Andres de Xecul and Museo de Mascaras Ceremoniales. Get out of town with these interesting Quetzaltenango side-trips: Tak'alik Ab'aj (in El Asintal) and Parque Ecologico Chuiraxamolo (in Santa Clara La Laguna).
