Built on a desolate swamp as a showcase capital of Imperial Russia, this grand city has certainly lived up to the expectations of its founder, Tsar Peter the Great.
Deepen your sense of the past at sights like Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood and Grand Peterhof Palace and Gardens. Do some cultural sightseeing at Saint Isaac's Cathedral and Palace Square. There's still lots to do: take an in-depth tour of Kazan Cathedral, contemplate the long history of Bronze Horseman, Monument To Peter I, see the interesting displays at The Anna Akhmatova Museum, and browse the exhibits of The Marly Palace.
