Florence of the North

Dresden boasts a long history as a royal residence of many Saxon kings.
Get out of town with these interesting Dresden side-trips: St. Nikolaikirche Aue (in Aue), Berlin (Bubbly Berlin, Walking tours, &more) and Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz (in Chemnitz). And it doesn't end there: admire the masterpieces at The Dresden Zwinger, take in the architecture and atmosphere at Katholische Hofkirche, make a trip to Procession of Princes, and examine the collection at Museum fur Sachsische Volkskunst mit Puppentheatersammlung.

Prepare for little chillier weather when traveling from Rome in February: high temperatures in Dresden hover around 5°C and lows are around -1°C. Leipzig is not only world-famous for its long tradition of trade fairs, but also for its vibrant music and cultural scenes.
Get out of town with these interesting Leipzig side-trips: Unterirdisches Zeitz (in Zeitz), Gera (Haus Schulenburg & Kunstsammlung Gera) and Das Chemnitzer Rathaus (in Chemnitz). There's still lots to do: take in the spiritual surroundings of St. Thomas Church (Thomaskirche), pause for some photo ops at Statue of Mephisto and Faust, explore the world behind art at Museum der Bildenden Kunste, and get engrossed in the history at Aegyptisches Museum University Leipzig.

Getting from Dresden to Leipzig by car takes about 1.5 hours. Other options: take a train; or take a bus. February in Leipzig sees daily highs of 6°C and lows of -1°C at night. Finish your sightseeing early on the 15th (Sat) so you can travel back home.
