The cultural, economic, and political center of the country, Vienna has developed from its early Celtic and Roman roots into a medieval and Baroque city, with an old town that was designated a World Heritage Site in 2001.
Step off the beaten path and head to Melk Abbey and Ringstrasse. Karlskirche and Burgruine Duernstein will appeal to history buffs. Change things up with a short trip to Wachau Valley in Joching (about 1h 35 min away). There's still lots to do: take an in-depth tour of Kaiserliche Schatzkammer Wien, admire the striking features of Cafe Gloriette, contemplate the waterfront views at Seeschlacht, and explore the world behind art at Leopold Museum.
