Lying in the Tamar Valley and surrounded by forested hills, the grid-patterned city of Launceston boasts shaded avenues, vibrant street life, and a cosmopolitan atmosphere.
Start off your visit on the 15th (Fri): indulge your senses at some of the top wineries in the area. Keep things going the next day: walk around City Park, then take in the exciting artwork at Design Centre Tasmania, then look for all kinds of wild species at Cataract Gorge Reserve, and finally snap pictures at Alexandra Suspension Bridge.

Canberra to Launceston is an approximately 5.5-hour flight. You can also do a combination of car and ferry; or do a combination of bus, train, and ferry. Plan for a bit cooler temperatures traveling from Canberra in January, with highs in Launceston at 28°C and lows at 12°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 16th (Sat) so you can drive to Coles Bay.
