One of the more unknown regions of Spain, Extremadura is a land of rich culture, abundant agriculture, and undiscovered natural wonders. The area’s historical importance comes across at Mérida’s Roman ruins and the impressive royal monastery in Guadalupe. Pride runs deep for local Extremeños, as the world-famous Iberian ham derives from the region’s black pigs. Home to the Province of Cáceres and its Monfrague National Park, as well several pristine nature reserves, Extremadura is also a well-known site for bird watching and outdoor activity.
