Inverness

Inverness, often described as the Gateway to the Highlands, is a thriving commercial and industrial center.
Venture out of the city with trips to Cairngorm Mountain (in Aviemore) and St Ninians Church (in Drumnadrochit). Next up on the itinerary: learn insider's secrets on a distillery tour, let your taste buds guide you at a local gastronomic tour, take in the history at Culloden Battlefield, and contemplate the long history of Fort George.

London to Inverness is an approximately 5-hour flight. You can also take a train; or drive. Prepare for a bit cooler weather when traveling from London in August: high temperatures in Inverness hover around 21°C and lows are around 10°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 21st (Fri) to allow time to drive to Fort William.

Fort William is the second largest settlement in the Highlands of Scotland with around 10,000 inhabitants – and the largest town: only the city of Inverness is larger.Fort William is a major tourist centre, with Glen Coe just to the south, Aonach Mòr to the east and Glenfinnan to the west, on the Road to the Isles. Get out of town with these interesting Fort William side-trips: Glenfinnan Viaduct (in Glenfinnan), Camusdarach Beach (in Arisaig) and Fort Augustus (Caledonian Canal Visitor Centre & Fort Augustus Abbey). There's still lots to do: see the sights as you ascend with Vertical Descents Scotland, take in the awesome beauty at Ben Nevis, take in the dramatic scenery at Steall Waterfall, and look for all kinds of wild species at Loch Linnhe Picnic Area.

Traveling by car from Inverness to Fort William takes 2 hours. Alternatively, you can take a bus. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 24th (Mon) so you can go by car to Isle of Skye.
