Built on seven hills, Lisbon has experienced a renaissance in recent years, making it the cultural star of Portugal.
Museum-lovers will appreciate Museu Calouste Gulbenkian and Igreja de Sao Roque. Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Basilica de Nossa Senhora do Rosario de Fatima and Batalha Monastery. Change things up with these side-trips from Lisbon: Sintra (Centro Historico de Sintra, Park and National Palace of Pena, &more), Basilica da Santissima Trindade (in Fatima) and Cabo da Roca (in Colares). Next up on the itinerary: contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Mosteiro dos Jeronimos, take some stellar pictures from Miradouro da Senhora do Monte, wander the streets of Alfama, and don't miss a visit to Rua Augusta.

The allure of the beaches and the town's historical center draw visitors to Lagos, a coastal destination in the Barlavento region of the Algarve.
Satisfy your inner culture vulture at Lagos Farol da Ponta da Piedade and Church of St. Anthony. Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Ponta da Piedade and Scuba & Snorkeling. Explore Lagos' surroundings by going to Praia dos Olhos de Água (in Olhos de Agua), Praia do Peneco (in Albufeira) and Pescadores Beach (in Armacao de Pera). Called "Oporto" by many, the city of Porto along the Duoro River lent the country and Port wine their names. Portugal's second-largest metropolis dates back to the 4th century, representing both a rich cultural past and industrial present through its architecture and style.
Head to Palacio da Bolsa and Garrafeira do Carmofor plenty of shopping. Get some historical perspective at Largo da Oliveira and Porto Cathedral (Se Catedral). Change things up with these side-trips from Porto: Paco dos Condes de Barcelos (in Barcelos), Citania de Briteiros (in Guimaraes) and Sao Bento da Porta Aberta (in Terras de Bouro). The adventure continues: learn about winemaking at Casa Ramos Pinto, pause for some serene contemplation at Igreja dos Carmelitas, take in the views from Ponte de Dom Luis I, and contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Capela das Almas.
