Kagoshima sits across the bay from Sakurajima, an active volcano that serves as a symbol of the city and works its way into many aspects of life here.
You'll find plenty of places to visit near Kagoshima: Tadamoto Park (in Isa), Chiran Peace Museum (in Minamikyushu) and Ibusuki (Onsen Resorts & JR Southernmost Nishioyama Station). There's still lots to do: get impressive views of Sakurajima, take in the spiritual surroundings of Kirishima Shrine, admire the masterpieces at Nagashima Museum, and get up close and personal with brilliant marine life at Kagoshima City Aquarium.

Take a train from Kagoshima to Fukuoka in 2 hours. Alternatively, you can do a combination of bus and flight; or drive. In December, plan for daily highs up to 13°C, and evening lows to 5°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 22nd (Sun) to allow time to take a train to Nagasaki.

The hilly port city of Nagasaki has become known internationally as one of the two Japanese cities to be destroyed by an atomic bomb towards the close of World War II.
You'll find plenty of places to visit near Nagasaki: Sasebo (Domtoren & Huis Ten Bosch). And it doesn't end there: get engrossed in the history at Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum, walk around Nagasaki Peace Park, take your sightseeing to a higher altitude at Mt. Inasa, and tour the pleasant surroundings at Glover Garden.

You can take a train from Fukuoka to Nagasaki in 2 hours. Other options are to drive; or take a bus. In December in Nagasaki, expect temperatures between 13°C during the day and 7°C at night. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 25th (Wed) to allow time to drive to Beppu.

Kick off your visit on the 26th (Thu): take in the spiritual surroundings of Usajingu Shrine, contemplate the waterfront views at Lake Kinrin, take in the natural beauty of Umi Jigoku, then witness a stunning natural landmark at Hells of Beppu, and finally soak in some Japanese tradition at some of the top local onsens. On your second day here, take some stellar pictures from Kokonoe Yume Otsurihashi Bridge and then take in the awesome beauty at Mt. Yufu.

You can drive from Nagasaki to Beppu in 3 hours. Alternatively, you can take a train; or take a bus. In December, daily temperatures in Beppu can reach 13°C, while at night they dip to 6°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 28th (Sat) to allow enough time to travel back home.
