You'll find plenty of places to visit near Sapporo: Rusutsu Resort (in Rusutsu-mura), Nikka Whisky Yoichi Distillery (in Yoichi-cho) and Otaru Canal (in Otaru). And it doesn't end there: fly down the slopes at Okurayama Lookout, contemplate the long history of Sapporo Clock Tower, pause for some serene contemplation at Sapporo St. Michael's Church, and examine the collection at Sapporo Beer Museum.

Traveling by flight from Osaka to Sapporo takes 4.5 hours. Alternatively, you can do a combination of train and flight; or take a train. When traveling from Osaka in January, plan for much colder days and slightly colder nights in Sapporo: temperatures range from -3°C by day to -6°C at night. Finish your sightseeing early on the 17th (Fri) so you can travel to Hakodate.
