The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
Kick off your visit on the 7th (Tue): take in the spiritual surroundings of Tofuku-ji Temple, then take in the spiritual surroundings of Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine, and then contemplate the long history of Kiyomizu-dera Temple. Get ready for a full day of sightseeing on the 8th (Wed): contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Kinkaku-ji, then step into the grandiose world of Nijo Castle, then contemplate the long history of Heian Shrine, and finally take a stroll through Gion.

You can take a train from Tokyo to Kyoto in 3 hours. Other options are to fly; or drive. In April, daily temperatures in Kyoto can reach 22°C, while at night they dip to 11°C. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 8th (Wed) so you can travel to Motobu-cho.

Formed by the gradual merging of several old fishing villages, today the island town of Motobu-cho boasts paradisal beaches of white sand, clear waters, and a rich array of wildlife.
Kick off your visit on the 9th (Thu): explore the gorgeous colors at USS Emmons, walk around Okinawa Memorial Park Ocean Expo Park, then meet the residents at Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium, and finally get up close and personal with brilliant marine life at Okichan Theater.

Getting from Kyoto to Motobu-cho by combination of train, flight, and ferry takes about 8.5 hours. Other options: do a combination of flight, taxi, and ferry; or do a combination of train and ferry. Prepare for a bit warmer weather when traveling from Kyoto in April: high temperatures in Motobu-cho hover around 28°C and lows are around 20°C. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 9th (Thu) so you can travel to Ishigaki.

You can do a combination of bus and flight from Motobu-cho to Ishigaki in 5.5 hours. Traveling from Motobu-cho in April, Ishigaki is somewhat warmer at night with lows of 24°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 10th (Fri) to allow enough time to ride a ferry to Iriomote-jima.
