A highlight of the west of the country, Tottori sits along the coast of the Sea of Japan.
You'll visit kid-friendly attractions like Matsue Castle and Watanabe Art Museum. Get out of town with these interesting Tottori side-trips: Amarube Railroad Bridge, Sorano Eki (in Kami-cho), Matsue (Former Yakumo Koizumi Residence & Buke Yashiki) and Shinonsen-cho (Onsen Resorts, Arayu, &more). Kobe

Walkable, small, and aesthetically charming, Kobe has served as Japan's first and premier international trading outpost since opening to trade with China in the mid-19th century.
Start off your visit on the 29th (Thu): don't miss a visit to Sannomiya Center Gai Shopping Street, take a stroll through Nankinmachi (Kobe Chinatown), take a stroll through Kobe Harborland, then gain insight at Disaster Reduction and Human Renovation Institution, and finally indulge in Japan's hot spring tradition at some of the top local onsens.

Getting from Tottori to Kobe by car takes about 2.5 hours. Other options: take a train; or take a bus. In December, daily temperatures in Kobe can reach 13°C, while at night they dip to 6°C. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 29th (Thu) so you can go by car to Osaka.

Osaka

Proud of their hometown's distinct culture and dialect, many natives of Osaka describe their city as "Japan's anti-capital." An antidote to Tokyo's hectic energy, Osaka marches to the beat of its own drum, serving as the country's longtime commercial and industrial hub.
Kick off your visit on the 30th (Fri): look for gifts at Shimada Shoten, find something for the whole family at Universal Studios Japan, and then examine the collection at Mizuno Sportology Gallery. On your second day here, step into the grandiose world of Osaka Castle, admire nature's wide array of creatures at Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan, then take a stroll through Dotombori District, and finally take in panoramic vistas at Kuchu Teien Observatory.

Kanazawa

An old castle town largely unspoiled during World War II, Kanazawa features well-preserved architecture spread across a range of districts.
Kids will appreciate attractions like Takayama Jinya and Sanmachi Suji. Get out of town with these interesting Kanazawa side-trips: Takayama (Hida Minzoka Mura Folk Village (Hida no Sato) & Takayama Showa Museum) and Shirakawa-mura (Wada House, Shirakawago Gassho Zukuri Minkaen, &more).
