The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine and Eikando Zenrinji Temple will appeal to history buffs. Kiyomizu-dera Temple and Nanzen-ji Temple are good opportunities to explore the local culture. Venture out of the city with trips to Nara (Nigatsu-do Temple & Nara Park) and Dotonbori (in Osaka). There's lots more to do: contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Toji, steep yourself in history at Tofuku-ji Temple, and take a stroll through Gion.

On the 23rd (Mon), examine the collection at Taketomi Folk Art Museum, then get to know the fascinating history of Island Countryside Settlement, then wander the streets of Misaki Town, and finally look for gifts at Yurateiku Market.

Wrap up your sightseeing on the 23rd (Mon) early enough to travel to Miyakojima.
