A resort town located in the foothills of Mount Fuji, Fujikawaguchiko-machi acts as a base for many who plan to take one of the trails up the iconic volcano.
The Hakone Open-Air Museum and Ivory Craft Museum will appeal to museum buffs. Take a break from the city and head to Mount Fuji and Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park. Explore Fujikawaguchiko-machi's surroundings by going to Nature & Wildlife Tours (in Fuji) and Narukawa Art Museum (in Hakone-machi). There's more to do: contemplate the waterfront views at Lake Kawaguchi.

The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
For shopping fun, head to Dotombori District or Daimaru Museum Umeda. Get some cultural insight at Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine and Kiyomizu-dera Temple. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Kyoto: Nara (Nara Park & Todaiji Temple Cultural Center). There's much more to do: contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Kinkaku-ji, steep yourself in history at Sanjusangendo Temple, step into the grandiose world of Nijo Castle, and make a trip to Gion.

You can drive from Fujikawaguchiko-machi to Kyoto in 4.5 hours. Alternatively, you can do a combination of bus and train; or do a combination of train and flight. Traveling from Fujikawaguchiko-machi in December, expect nights in Kyoto to be about the same, around 4°C, while days are a bit warmer, around 13°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 4th (Wed) to allow enough time to take a train to Himeji.
