Perhaps the island's best-known hot spring resort, Noboribetsu has a long history of tourism.

Kutchan-cho's reputation rests on two things: skiing and potatoes.
Escape the urban bustle at Shimamu Beach and Niseko Hanazono Resort. Change things up with these side-trips from Kutchan-cho: Niseko-cho (Niseko Annupuri International Ski Area & Niseko Village Ski Resort), Shinsennuma (in Kyowa-cho) and Yoichi-cho (Nikka Whisky Yoichi Distillery & Old Shimoyoichi Unjoya). You can drive from Noboribetsu to Kutchan-cho in 2 hours. Other options are to take a train; or take a bus. When traveling from Noboribetsu in April, plan for slightly colder days and about the same nights in Kutchan-cho: temperatures range from 9°C by day to 7°C at night. Cap off your sightseeing on the 1st (Fri) early enough to go by car to Hakodate.

A gateway to the island, Hakodate has gained a reputation for its waterfront attractions, its proximity to some of the island's most popular natural sites, and its seafood.

Drive from Kutchan-cho to Hakodate in 2.5 hours. Alternatively, you can take a train; or do a combination of train and flight. In May, plan for daily highs up to 18°C, and evening lows to 11°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 4th (Mon) early enough to travel to Sapporo.

A modern, bustling city known for its beer brewery, Sapporo attracts millions of visitors with its Snow Festival, during which elaborate ice and snow sculptures are exhibited all over town.
Take a break from the city and head to Otaru Canal and Mt. Moiwa. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Sapporo: Asobeach Ishikari (in Ishikari), Chitose (Spas, Hello Kitty Happy Flight, &more) and Otaru (Asakusa Bridge & Otaru Wine Gallery).
