Situated on the confluence of the rivers Ouse and Foss, York has witnessed an abundance of major political events throughout its two millennia of existence.
Visit Sandsend Beach and Filey Beach for some beach relaxation. Church of Saint Mary, Whitby and Fountains Abbey will appeal to history buffs. You'll find plenty of places to visit near York: Whitby Harbour (in Whitby), Eden Camp Modern History Theme Museum (in Malton) and RSPB Bempton Cliffs (in Bempton). Kick off your visit on the 30th (Sun): admire the masterpieces at Russell-Cotes Art Gallery & Museum, step into the grandiose world of Corfe Castle, and then take in the dramatic natural features at Lulworth Cove. Keep things going the next day: enjoy the sand and surf at Sandbanks Beach and then stroll through Hengistbury Head Beach.
