Nagano

Near the confluence of the Chikuma and Sai rivers, Nagano combines historic sites with nearby forested alps dotted with shrines.
Start off your visit on the 19th (Fri): take in the spiritual surroundings of Saiko-ji Temple. Keep things going the next day: take in the pleasant sights at Matsumoto Castle, contemplate the long history of Kaichi Gakko Primary School, then experience rural life at Daio Wasabi Farm, and finally contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Zenko-ji Temple.

Tokyo to Nagano is an approximately 2-hour train ride. You can also drive; or take a bus. In October, Nagano is slightly colder than Tokyo - with highs of 21°C and lows of 14°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 22nd (Mon) to allow enough time to take a train to Shizuoka.

Shizuoka

With its upmarket shopping districts and scenic coastal landscape, Shizuoka stands as the main urban area of a province often referred to as Japan's riviera.
On the 22nd (Mon), make a trip to Mount Fuji and then take in the spiritual surroundings of Fujisan Hongu Sengen Taisha Shrine. On the next day, delve into the lush surroundings at Miho Seacoast (Miho no Matsubara Beach) and then take in the dramatic scenery at Shiraito Falls.

Take a train from Nagano to Shizuoka in 3.5 hours. Alternatively, you can drive; or take a bus. Traveling from Nagano in October, plan for somewhat warmer nights in Shizuoka, with lows around 20°C. Osaka
