Chemnitz ©
Chemnitz, known from 1953 to 1990 as Karl-Marx-Stadt, is the third-largest city in the Free State of Saxony, Germany. Appreciate the collections at Colditz Castle and Meissen Porzellan Manufaktur & Museum. Get some historical perspective at Albrechtsburg Castle and Jakobikirche. Explore Chemnitz's surroundings by going to Neue Landschaft Ronneburg (in Ronneburg), Jena (Zeiss-Planetarium & Johannisfriedhof und Friedenskirche) and Gluck-Auf-Turm (in Eibenstock). There's lots more to do: Head underground at Saalfelder Feengrotten, see the interesting displays at Villa Esche, pause for some photo ops at Karl-Marx-Monument, and head outdoors with Felsenlabyrinth auf der Luisenburg.

To find ratings, more things to do, where to stay, and tourist information, use the Chemnitz road trip site.

If you are flying in from United States, the closest major aiports are Dresden Airport, Leipzig/Halle Airport and Erfurt Airport. May in Chemnitz sees daily highs of 64°F and lows of 53°F at night. Cap off your sightseeing on the 31st (Fri) early enough to travel back home.
