The Gateway to the Great Barrier Reef

A neat, cosmopolitan city of shaded plazas and laid-back neighborhoods, Cairns serves as a popular base for exploration of the surrounding region and the Great Barrier Reef, as well as a center for watersport activities like surfing or waterskiing.
Kids will appreciate attractions like Scuba & Snorkeling and Esplanade Boardwalk. Change things up with these side-trips from Cairns: Palm Cove (Village Gallery, Spas, &more). Spend the 18th (Fri) wandering through the wild on a nature and wildlife tour. Spend the 22nd (Tue) on the rails with a train tour. There's still lots to do: take in nature's colorful creations at Botanical Gardens, kick back and relax at Trinity Beach, see the world from above with a helicopter tour, and admire the sheer force of Josephine Falls.

To find traveler tips, photos, other places to visit, and other tourist information, read Cairns trip maker website.

Sydney to Cairns is an approximately 4.5-hour flight. You can also drive; or take a train. Expect a bit warmer temperatures when traveling from Sydney in June; daily highs in Cairns reach 30°C and lows reach 22°C. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 28th (Mon) so you can catch the flight back home.

An area defined by its close relationship with the ocean and its focus on the beach-going lifestyle, Cairns Region has a picture-postcard aesthetic that combines favorably with a relaxed, down-to-earth atmosphere. A relative small slither of land--4,135 sq km (1,597 sq mi)--the region nevertheless boasts a large number of attractive beaches, coastal enclaves, scenic towns, and close proximity to the Great Barrier Reef. The region revolves around the economic prosperity of its immaculate capital, the city of Cairns.
