Famed for its landscape of unusually shaped stone formations and churches cut into the natural rocks, Goreme sits in the central part of the country, an area originally settled during Roman times.
Step out of Goreme with an excursion to Kaymakli Underground City in Derinkuyu--about 32 minutes away. There's still lots to do: soar above the sights with a balloon tour, explore the stunning scenery at Peri Bacalari, appreciate the extensive heritage of Güvercinlik Vadisi (Pigeon Valley), and stop by Tribal Collections Nomadic Rugs and Textiles.

Getting from Istanbul to Goreme by flight takes about 4.5 hours. Other options: drive; or do a combination of train and bus. Traveling from Istanbul in July, plan for a bit cooler nights in Goreme, with lows around 18°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 5th (Sun) to allow enough time to travel to Pamukkale.
