Kirkwall is the largest town and capital of the Orkney Islands of Scotland. On the 21st (Sun), steep yourself in history at Ring of Brodgar, steep yourself in history at Skara Brae, then steep yourself in history at Maeshowe, and finally take an in-depth tour of Broch of Gurness. Get ready for a full day of sightseeing on the next day: take in the architecture and atmosphere at Italian Chapel on Lamb Holm, steep yourself in history at Bishop & Earls Palace, steep yourself in history at Saint Magnus Cathedral, take an in-depth tour of The Orkney Museum, then explore the ancient world of Barnhouse Neolithic Settlement, and finally contemplate the long history of Standing Stones of Stenness.

You can fly from Edinburgh to Kirkwall in 3.5 hours. Alternatively, you can do a combination of train and flight; or do a combination of train and bus. While traveling from Edinburgh, expect slightly colder days and about the same nights in Kirkwall, ranging from highs of 19°C to lows of 11°C. Cap off your sightseeing on the 22nd (Mon) early enough to travel to Inverness.

Inverness, often described as the Gateway to the Highlands, is a thriving commercial and industrial center.
On the 23rd (Tue), look for all kinds of wild species at RZSS Highland Wildlife Park, then see the interesting displays at Highland Folk Museum, and then witness the site of a historic battle at Culloden Battlefield. Keep things going the next day: step into the grandiose world of Fort George, admire the natural beauty at Cawdor Castle, and then kick back and relax at Nairn Beach.

Fort William is the second largest settlement in the Highlands of Scotland with around 10,000 inhabitants – and the largest town: only the city of Inverness is larger.Fort William is a major tourist centre, with Glen Coe just to the south, Aonach Mòr to the east and Glenfinnan to the west, on the Road to the Isles. Step off the beaten path and head to Oban Distillery and Glenfinnan Viaduct. Change things up with these side-trips from Fort William: McCaig's Tower (in Oban), Highland Titles Nature Reserve (in Duror) and Inveraray Castle (in Inveraray). There's much more to do: kick back and relax at Camusdarach Beach, take in the awesome beauty at Ben Nevis, and don't miss a visit to Neptune's Staircase.
