Kirkwall is the largest town and capital of the Orkney Islands of Scotland. Kick off your visit on the 23rd (Sat): contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Saint Magnus Cathedral, steep yourself in history at Bishop & Earls Palace, take in the architecture and atmosphere at Italian Chapel on Lamb Holm, explore the ancient world of Maeshowe, then contemplate the long history of Ring of Brodgar, and finally contemplate the long history of Skara Brae.

Start off your visit on the 24th (Sun): take your sightseeing to a higher altitude at Cairngorm Mountain and then don't miss a visit to Culloden Battlefield. Fort William is the second largest settlement in the Highlands of Scotland with around 10,000 inhabitants – and the largest town: only the city of Inverness is larger.Fort William is a major tourist centre, with Glen Coe just to the south, Aonach Mòr to the east and Glenfinnan to the west, on the Road to the Isles. Get some cultural insight at Glenfinnan Viaduct and Saint Andrew's Church. Take a break from the city and head to Ben Nevis and Nevis Range Mountain Resort. Venture out of the city with trips to Castle Stalker (in Appin), Highland Titles Nature Reserve (in Duror) and Morar Beach (in Morar). Next up on the itinerary: admire the sheer force of Steall Waterfall, enjoy the sand and surf at Camusdarach Beach, and see the interesting displays at Treasures of the Earth.
