Inverness, often described as the Gateway to the Highlands, is a thriving commercial and industrial center.
Get in touch with nature at Cairngorm Mountain and RZSS Highland Wildlife Park. Get some cultural insight at Culloden Battlefield and Fort George. Get out of town with these interesting Inverness side-trips: Dunrobin Castle and Gardens (in Golspie), Highland Folk Museum (in Newtonmore) and Nigg Old Church (in Nigg). Fort William is the second largest settlement in the Highlands of Scotland with around 10,000 inhabitants – and the largest town: only the city of Inverness is larger.Fort William is a major tourist centre, with Glen Coe just to the south, Aonach Mòr to the east and Glenfinnan to the west, on the Road to the Isles. Kick off your visit on the 23rd (Tue): steep yourself in history at Glenfinnan Viaduct, then take your sightseeing to a higher altitude at Nevis Range Mountain Resort, then take your sightseeing to a higher altitude at Ben Nevis, and finally admire the sheer force of Steall Waterfall. Get ready for a full day of sightseeing on the next day: take a memorable drive along General Wade’s Military Roads, steep yourself in history at Fort Augustus Abbey, then see the interesting displays at West Highland Museum, and finally appreciate the views at Glen Coe.
