The isolated hamlet of Cabo Polonio, part of Uruguay's remote Rocha province, offers a different take on a South American beach holiday.
Step off the beaten path and head to Medanos de la Barra de Valizas and Bosque de Ombues. You'll get in some beach time at Parque Nacional de Cabo Polonio and Playa del Barco. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Cabo Polonio: La Pedrera (La Pedrera & Balneario Punta Rubia). There's more to do: kick back and relax at Playa de la Calavera and enjoy the sea views from Lighthouse of Cabo Polonio.

Formerly a sleepy little fishing town, Punta del Diablo has become a popular seaside getaway with a wealth of attractions natural and manmade.
Kick off your visit on the 29th (Mon): stroll through Playa del Rivero, kick back and relax at Playa Grande, and then steep yourself in history at Fortress of Santa Teresa. Here are some ideas for day two: enjoy the sand and surf at Playa de la Viuda, enjoy the sand and surf at Playa La Moza, and then take in the views from Puente Colgante.

Do a combination of taxi and bus from Cabo Polonio to Punta del Diablo in 1.5 hours. Alternatively, you can drive. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 30th (Tue) early enough to drive to Punta del Este.

A holiday in Canelones allows for the exploration of the west bank of the river Arroyo Canelon Chico.
