Steeped in history and tradition, Mainz is an elegant, modern city in Germany's largest wine-growing region and a major center for tourism.
Change things up with these side-trips from Mainz: Rheinfels Castle (in Sankt Goar), Speyer (Speyer Cathedral & Technik Museum Speyer) and Loreley (in Sankt Goarshausen). There's still lots to do: take in the spiritual surroundings of St. Stephan's Church (Stephanskirche), admire the striking features of Kirschgarten, don't miss a visit to Markt, and take in the architecture and atmosphere at St. Augustine's Church.

Trier may be the oldest city in Germany, founded long before the Roman times.
Change things up with a short trip to St. Laurentius in Saarburg (about 30 minutes away).
