The largest city on the island, Fukuoka formed through the merger of two former cities that had grown up either side of the Naka River.
Museum-lovers will appreciate Fukuoka Asian Art Museum and Kyushu Railway History Museum. Deepen your sense of the past at sights like Dazaifu Tenman-gu and Kushida Shrine. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Fukuoka: Kyushu National Museum (in Dazaifu), Kitakyushu Museum of Natural History & Human History (in Kitakyushu) and Kumamoto (Sakuranobaba Johsaien & Kumamoto Castle). There's still lots to do: browse the different shops at Tenjin Underground Shopping Center, go for a walk through Ohori Park, view the masterpieces at Acros Fukuoka, and enjoy breathtaking views from Fukuoka Tower.
