Rome is known for historic sites, nightlife, museums, classes, and shopping. Your plan includes some of its best attractions: contemplate the long history of Colosseum, ponder the design of Trevi Fountain, don't miss a visit to Spanish Steps, and explore the ancient world of Palatine Hill.

San Francisco, USA to Rome is an approximately 16-hour flight. You can also do a combination of train and flight; or do a combination of bus, shuttle, and flight. The time zone changes from Pacific Standard Time (PST) to Central European Time (CET), which is usually a 9 hour difference. Traveling from San Francisco in December, you can expect nighttime temperatures to be a bit cooler in Rome, with lows of 39°F. Considered a cultural, artistic, and architectural jewel of Italy, Florence is the birthplace of the Italian Renaissance.
On the 29th (Sun), take in the views from Ponte Vecchio, take some stellar pictures from Piazzale Michelangelo, admire the masterpieces at Gallerie Degli Uffizi, take in the architecture and atmosphere at Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, then appreciate the extensive heritage of Piazza del Duomo, and finally steep yourself in history at Loggia dei Lanzi. On your second day here, examine the collection at Academy Of Florence Art Gallery, explore the world behind art at Pitti Palace, then take in panoramic vistas at Campanile di Giotto, then make a trip to Piazza della Signoria, and finally contemplate in the serene atmosphere at The Baptistery of St. John.

You can take a train from Rome to Florence in 2 hours. Alternatively, you can drive; or fly. In December, daytime highs in Florence are 55°F, while nighttime lows are 39°F. Cap off your sightseeing on the 30th (Mon) early enough to catch the train to Venice.

Get out of town with these interesting Venice side-trips: Padua (Scrovegni Chapel & Basilica di Sant’Antonio). Traveling by train from Florence to Venice takes 2.5 hours. Alternatively, you can drive; or take a bus. In December, Venice is slightly colder than Florence - with highs of 49°F and lows of 34°F. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 2nd (Thu) to allow time to take a train to Milan.

In many ways the most modern of Italian cities, Milan is a busy, elegant metropolis with an impressive list of grand palaces, fine churches, and important museums.
On the 3rd (Fri), admire the landmark architecture of Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, then take in the spiritual surroundings of Duomo di Milano, then see La Casa Maledetta, and finally admire the masterpieces at Pinacoteca Ambrosiana. Here are some ideas for day two: explore the different monuments and memorials at Monumental Cemetery and then step into the grandiose world of Castello Sforzesco.

Getting from Venice to Milan by train takes about 2.5 hours. Other options: drive; or do a combination of train and flight. In January, plan for daily highs up to 46°F, and evening lows to 32°F. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 4th (Sat) so you can travel back home.
