Sasebo

With its U.S. Navy base, Sasebo has certainly developed pockets with an international feel: in downtown, often known as Sailor Town, you'll happen upon a number of eateries serving American-style hamburgers.
Kick off your visit on the 23rd (Tue): get in on the family fun at Huis Ten Bosch.

Fukuoka to Sasebo is an approximately 2-hour car ride. You can also take a train; or take a bus. In March, plan for daily highs up to 17°C, and evening lows to 8°C. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 24th (Wed) so you can go by car to Nagasaki.

The hilly port city of Nagasaki has become known internationally as one of the two Japanese cities to be destroyed by an atomic bomb towards the close of World War II. This history, of course, remains important to the city, its inhabitants, and to the wider world, and should not be forgotten.
Your day by day itinerary now includes Shinchi Chinatown, Mt. Inasa, Nagasaki Peace Park, and other attractions you added. Start off your visit on the 24th (Wed): steep yourself in history at Glover House and Office, take in nature's colorful creations at Glover Garden, pause for some serene contemplation at Chapel of Seishin Convent Nagasaki, walk around Nabekanmuriyama Park, then make a trip to Glover Sky Road, and finally examine the collection at Dejima. You can drive from Sasebo to Nagasaki in 1.5 hours. Alternatively, you can take a bus; or take a train. March in Nagasaki sees daily highs of 17°C and lows of 8°C at night. Finish your sightseeing early on the 26th (Fri) to allow enough time to take a train to Kagoshima.

Kagoshima sits across the bay from Sakurajima, an active volcano that serves as a symbol of the city and works its way into many aspects of life here.
Kick off your visit on the 26th (Fri): get engrossed in the history at Museum of the Meiji Restoration and then pause for some photo ops at Saigo Takamori Statue. Get ready for a full day of sightseeing on the next day: meet the residents at Kagoshima City Aquarium, don't miss a visit to Sengan-en, contemplate the long history of Saigo Takamori’s hideout, then enjoy breathtaking views from Shiroyama Observatory, and finally enjoy breathtaking views from Mt. Shiroyama.

You can take a train from Nagasaki to Kagoshima in 3.5 hours. Alternatively, you can drive; or do a combination of car and ferry. In March, daytime highs in Kagoshima are 17°C, while nighttime lows are 5°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 28th (Sun) early enough to drive to Miyazaki.

Miyazaki

Enjoying some of the warmest weather on Japan's main islands, Miyazaki thrived as a resort town in the 1980s, with hotels, beaches, and seafood restaurants galore.
Start off your visit on the 29th (Mon): contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Udo Shrine, get great views at Horikiri Pass, tour the pleasant surroundings at Onino Sentakuita, then head off the coast to Aoshima Island, and finally contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Aoshima Shrine. On the 30th (Tue), you'll have a packed day of sightseeing: contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Miyazaki Shinto Shrine, then make a trip to Saitobaru Tomb, then don't miss a visit to Saitobaru Park, and finally indulge in Japan's hot spring tradition at some of the top local onsens.

Traveling by car from Kagoshima to Miyazaki takes 2.5 hours. Alternatively, you can take a train; or take a bus. Traveling from Kagoshima in March, expect a bit warmer with lows of 9°C in Miyazaki. Finish your sightseeing early on the 30th (Tue) so you can drive to Takachiho-cho.

Takachiho-cho

The mountain town of Takachiho-cho remains a place of great importance to Japan's spiritual and natural heritage, and the point where these two things intersect.
Start off your visit on the 31st (Wed): take in the pleasant sights at Amano Yasugawara, contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Amano Iwato Shrine, steep yourself in history at Kushifuru Shrine, then explore the stunning scenery at Takachiho Gorge, then take in the spiritual surroundings of Takachiho Shrine, and finally take in the spiritual surroundings of Tokyotakachiho Shrine.

Traveling from Miyazaki in March, expect slightly colder with lows of 6°C in Takachiho-cho. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 1st (Thu) so you can go by car to Beppu.

Beppu

The resort town of Beppu puts the geothermal nature of the region to good use.

Traveling by car from Takachiho-cho to Beppu takes 2.5 hours. Alternatively, you can do a combination of taxi and train; or do a combination of bus and train. Traveling from Takachiho-cho in April, expect nights in Beppu to be about the same, around 13°C, while days are a bit cooler, around 20°C. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 3rd (Sat) so you can go by car back home.
