Walkable, small, and aesthetically charming, Kobe has served as Japan's first and premier international trading outpost since opening to trade with China in the mid-19th century.
Family-friendly places like Arima Onsen and Cup Noodle Museum Osaka Ikeda will thrill your kids. Head to Nankinmachi (Kobe Chinatown) and Kobe Harborlandfor plenty of shopping. Venture out of the city with trips to Himeji (Shoshazan Engyoji, Koko-en, &more). There's still lots to do: admire the natural beauty at Kobe Nunobiki Herb Gardens, take a stroll through Kitano Ijinkan-gai, take in the spiritual surroundings of Ikuta Shrine, and sample the tasty concoctions at Nadano Sakagura.

Pilgrims and aviators come to Narita, a town known during the Edo period for its temple, and now known primarily for its airport.
Bring the kids along to Kamogawa Sea World and Naritasan Omote Sando. Step off the beaten path and head to Okitsu Beach and Cape Inubozaki. Get out of town with these interesting Narita side-trips: Hasaki Beach (in Kamisu) and Gyobumisaki (in Asahi). The adventure continues: engage your brain at Museum of Aeronautical Sciences.
