Detroit, USA to Tokyo is an approximately 17-hour flight. The time zone changes from Eastern Standard Time (EST) to Japan Standard Time (JST), which is usually a 14 hour difference. Plan for somewhat warmer temperatures traveling from Detroit in January, with highs in Tokyo at 50°F and lows at 35°F. On the 10th (Mon), you're off to Wakayama.

Split into two parts by the Kinokawa River, the city of Wakayama stands nestled in the eponymous plain, overlooked by a historic hilltop castle that was rebuilt after World War II.

You can fly from Tokyo to Wakayama in 5 hours. Alternatively, you can take a train; or drive. Expect a daytime high around 48°F in January, and nighttime lows around 39°F. Cap off your sightseeing on the 12th (Wed) early enough to go by car to Kyoto.

The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.

You can travel from Wakayama to Kyoto in 2 hours. Alternatively, you can drive. Traveling from Wakayama in January, plan for little chillier nights in Kyoto, with lows around 34°F. On the 13th (Thu), wrap the sightseeing up by early afternoon so you can drive to Kuwana.

The historic town of Kuwana stands as one of the 53 post stations that dotted the route between Kyoto and Edo (as Tokyo was then known) during the Edo period.

Start off your visit on the 13th (Thu): admire the natural beauty at Nabana no Sato.
