Tokyo holds the status of most populous metropolitan area in the world--a fact you'll find tangible as you walk the bustling streets and explore its diverse neighborhoods and cultures.
Odaiba and Tokyo National Museum are good opportunities to explore the local culture. Shop till you drop at Ginza and Wa Space. There's lots more to do: take in the spiritual surroundings of Sensō-ji, take an in-depth tour of Fukagawa Edo Museum, take a stroll through Takeshita Street, and see the interesting displays at Edo-Tokyo Museum.

Valletta, Malta to Tokyo is an approximately 18-hour flight. You can also do a combination of flight and train. Due to the time zone difference, you'll lose 8 hours traveling from Valletta to Tokyo. August in Tokyo sees daily highs of 36°C and lows of 28°C at night. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 4th (Tue) to allow time to drive to Shimoda.

On a trip to Shimoda, a small town nestled on the tip of the Izu peninsula, you can take advantage of the scenic sandy beaches and soak in the laid-back atmosphere.
Kick off your visit on the 5th (Wed): stroll through Inatori Ukiuki Beach, then stroll through Otago Beach, and then kick back and relax at Iwachi Beach. Get ready for a full day of sightseeing on the next day: kick back and relax at Sotoura Beach, admire the natural beauty at Hino Broccolini Garden, then enjoy the sand and surf at Kisami Ohama Beach, and finally enjoy the sand and surf at Tatadohama Beach.

You can drive from Tokyo to Shimoda in 2.5 hours. Alternatively, you can take a train. In August, daytime highs in Shimoda are 34°C, while nighttime lows are 30°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 6th (Thu) early enough to take a train to Kyoto.

The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
Your inner history buff will appreciate Nijo Castle and Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine. Your cultural itinerary includes sights like Gion and Kinkaku-ji. Explore Kyoto's surroundings by going to Nara (Todai-ji Temple & Nara Park), Jikko Japanese Knife Shop Namba Skyo (in Namba) and Dotonbori (in Osaka). It doesn't end there: contemplate the long history of Kiyomizu-dera Temple and get engrossed in the history at Kyoto Museum of Traditional Crafts Fureaikan.

You can take a train from Shimoda to Kyoto in 4.5 hours. Other options are to drive; or do a combination of train and flight. Traveling from Shimoda in August, expect nights in Kyoto to be about the same, around 29°C, while days are somewhat warmer, around 39°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 9th (Sun) to allow enough time to take a train to Hiroshima.
