Ishigaki, the most populous island in the chain, features the country's southernmost city and acts as a transport hub for exploring the landmasses that surround.
Kick off your visit on the 1st (Thu): enjoy the sand and surf at Kondoi Beach, enjoy the sand and surf at Yonehara Beach, get outside with Cape Hirakubozaki, then take in panoramic vistas at Tamatorizaki Observatory, and finally get a new perspective on things with Boat Tours & Water Sports. Here are some ideas for day two: get to know the fascinating history of Island Countryside Settlement, take a leisurely stroll along Nishi Pier, make a trip to Euglena Mall, then see some colorful creatures with a scuba or snorkeling tour, then stroll around Kabira Park, and finally walk around Banna Park.

Townsville, Australia to Ishigaki is an approximately 16.5-hour flight. The time zone difference moving from Australian Eastern Standard Time (Queensland) to Japan Standard Time is minus 1 hour. Traveling from Townsville in October, expect a bit warmer with lows of 28°C in Ishigaki. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 2nd (Fri) early enough to ride a ferry to Iriomote-jima.

Start off your visit on the 3rd (Sat): step off the mainland to explore Iriomote Island, then enjoy the sand and surf at Hoshisuna Beach, then find your balance on the water with some of the best stand-up paddleboarding in the area, and finally scramble along the landscape with a canyoning and rapelling tour.

You can ride a ferry from Ishigaki to Iriomote-jima in an hour. In October, plan for daily highs up to 34°C, and evening lows to 28°C. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 3rd (Sat) so you can catch the ferry to Miyakojima.

A city jurisdiction formed after the merger of several towns in 2005, Miyakojima spans six linked-up islands.
On the 4th (Sun), enjoy the sea views from Higashi Hennazaki Lighthouse, make a trip to East Henna Cape, kick back and relax at Aragusuku Beach, then kick back and relax at Sunayama Beach, then snap pictures at Irabu Ohashi, and finally make a trip to Ikema Ohashi Bridge. Keep things going the next day: head off the coast to Irabu-jima Island, contemplate the waterfront views at Toriike Pond, head off the coast to Shimojiiima Island, then add some adventure to your tour with a kayaking and canoeing tour, then get outside with Yonaha Maehama Beach, and finally snap pictures at Kurima Bridge.

Getting from Miyakojima to Hiroshima by combination of flight and train takes about 4.5 hours. Other options: fly; or do a combination of flight and ferry. In October, Hiroshima is slightly colder than Miyakojima - with highs of 26°C and lows of 19°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 6th (Tue) so you can take a train to Kyoto.

Expect a bit cooler weather when traveling from Kyoto in October: highs in Nikko hover around 22°C, while lows dip to 19°C.
