A gateway to the island, Hakodate has gained a reputation for its waterfront attractions, its proximity to some of the island's most popular natural sites, and its seafood.
Motomachi and Onuma Park Walking Path will appeal to history buffs. Get some cultural insight at Trappist Monasteries and Kyu Soma-tei. There's lots more to do: take in the spiritual surroundings of Trappistine Monasteries, examine the collection at Hakodate Magistrate's Office, get engrossed in the history at Hakodate Seikan Renrakusen Memorial Museum Mashumaru, and stop by Kanemori Red Brick Warehouse.

Traveling by car from Hakodate to Furano takes 4.5 hours. Alternatively, you can do a combination of flight and train; or do a combination of train and bus. Traveling from Hakodate in January, things will get a bit cooler in Furano: highs are around -5°C and lows about -13°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 17th (Fri) to allow enough time to take a train to Asahikawa.

You can take a train from Furano to Asahikawa in 1.5 hours. Alternatively, you can drive; or take a bus. Traveling from Furano in January, plan for somewhat warmer nights in Asahikawa, with lows around -9°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 19th (Sun) early enough to take a train to Sapporo.
