The former capital of Guatemala and a World Heritage Site, Antigua retains its colonial charm and remains one of the most visited destinations in the country.
El Mirador and Casa Popenoe will appeal to history buffs. Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Convento Santa Clara and La Merced. Change things up with these side-trips from Antigua: Guatemala City (Edificio de Correos Central & Oakland Mall). There's much more to do: delve into the distant past at La Recoleccion, pause for some serene contemplation at Catedral de San Jose, admire the striking features of Iglesia Escuela de Cristo, and get engrossed in the history at La Azotea.

Washington DC, USA to Antigua is an approximately 8.5-hour combination of subway, bus, and flight. You can also fly; or drive. The time zone changes from Eastern Standard Time (EST) to Central Standard Time (CST), which is usually a -1 hour difference. Traveling from Washington DC in June, expect Antigua to be a bit cooler, temps between 77°F and 62°F. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 18th (Tue) early enough to drive to Retalhuleu.

Getting from Antigua to Retalhuleu by car takes about 3 hours. Other options: do a combination of bus and taxi; or take a bus. In June, Retalhuleu is a bit warmer than Antigua - with highs of 89°F and lows of 73°F. Finish your sightseeing early on the 19th (Wed) so you can drive to Coban.

Located at the center of one of the country's primary coffee growing areas, the affluent city of Coban offerss a scattered few cultural attractions, a relaxed and welcoming vibe, and proximity to a wealth of natural highlights.
On the 20th (Thu), identify plant and animal life at Orquigonia, then look for all kinds of wild species at Biotopo del Quetzal, and then explore the fascinating underground world of Parque Nacional Grutas de Lanquin.

Traveling by car from Retalhuleu to Coban takes 5.5 hours. Alternatively, you can take a bus. Expect slightly colder temperatures when traveling from Retalhuleu in June; daily highs in Coban reach 80°F and lows reach 62°F. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 20th (Thu) so you can go by car to Izabal.
