Aptly nicknamed the Eternal City, Rome is the birthplace of the Roman Empire, one of the world's greatest civilizations ever.
Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Galleria Borghese and Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore. Colosseum and St. Peter's Basilica will appeal to history buffs. And it doesn't end there: take in the architecture and atmosphere at Pantheon, steep yourself in history at Roman Forum, make a trip to Trevi Fountain, and admire the masterpieces at Vatican Museums.
