Venture out of the city with trips to Ancient Olive Tree (in Vouves), Balos Lagoon (in Kissamos) and Elafonissi Beach (in Elafonissi). Get out of town with these interesting Rethymnon side-trips: Frangokastello Beach (in Frangokastello), St. Nicholas Church (in Georgioupolis) and Reptisland (in Melidoni). There's still lots to do: take a stroll through Rethymnon Old Town, take in the architecture and atmosphere at The Holy Monastery of Preveli, explore the activities along Lake Kournas, and don't miss a visit to Rimondi Fountain.

Getting from Rethymnon to Hersonissos by car takes about 1.5 hours. Other options: take a bus. When traveling from Rethymnon in July, plan for slightly colder days in Hersonissos, with highs around 84°F, while nights are about the same with lows around 69°F. Wrap up your sightseeing by early afternoon on the 16th (Thu) to allow time for travel back home.
