El Calafate tourism thrives mostly thanks to the city's proximity to a World Heritage-listed national park, famed for containing over 40 large glaciers.
On the 1st (Tue), tour the pleasant surroundings at Laguna Nimez Reserva Natural Municipal and then take in the dramatic natural features at Estacionamiento Pasarelas Glaciar Perito Moreno. Keep things going the next day: see the interesting displays at El Calafate Historical Interpretation Center, head outdoors with Enjoy!, and then take a stroll through Avenida Libertador.

Traveling by bus from El Chalten to El Calafate takes 3.5 hours. Alternatively, you can drive; or take a shuttle. Expect a daytime high around 57°F in December, and nighttime lows around 56°F. Finish your sightseeing early on the 2nd (Wed) to allow enough time to fly to Ushuaia.

Ushuaia

Often called the "End of the World" because of its position on the southernmost tip of South America, the expanding city of Ushuaia serves as both a busy commercial port and attractive tourist hub.
Your cultural itinerary includes sights like Estancia Harberton and Museo del Fin del Mundo. You'll explore the less-touristy side of things at Helicopter Tours and Laguna Esmeralda. Step out of Ushuaia with an excursion to Lago Roca in Tierra del Fuego National Park--about 40 minutes away. Getting from El Calafate to Ushuaia by flight takes about 3.5 hours. Other options: drive; or do a combination of car and ferry. Traveling from El Calafate in January, you can expect nighttime temperatures to be a bit cooler in Ushuaia, with lows of 43°F. Finish your sightseeing early on the 5th (Sat) so you can travel back home.
