Situated in a basin between two mountain ranges, Taipei appeals to tourists with its blend of Asian cultures, living side by side amidst Japanese-era mansions and Taoist temples.
Get a sense of the local culture at Chiufen (Jiufen Old Street) and Taipei Confucius Temple. Your inner history buff will appreciate Lungshan Temple and Songshan Fengtian Temple. When in Taipei, make a side trip to see Lanyang Museum in Toucheng, approximately Toucheng away. Next up on the itinerary: take an in-depth tour of National Palace Museum, get to know the fascinating history of Taiwan Governor and Government Department of Transportation Railway, contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Hsing Tian Kong, and wander the streets of Ximending.

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia to Taipei is an approximately 9.5-hour flight. You can also do a combination of car and ferry. Expect much colder weather when traveling from Kuala Lumpur in December: highs in Taipei hover around 23°C, while lows dip to 18°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 26th (Sun) early enough to take a train to Hualien.

Huashi

Nestled between the sea and the mountains, Hualien boasts a number of attractions, both natural and manmade.
Step out of the city life by going to Shakadang Trail and Baiyang Trail. Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Island Life Taiwan Adventures & Experiences and Yanzihkou Trail (Swallow Grotto). There's still lots to do: hike along Zhuilu Old Trail, get outside with Qixing Lake Binhai Bicycle Road, and kick back and relax at Chishingtan Scenic Area.

You can take a train from Taipei to Hualien in 3.5 hours. Alternatively, you can drive; or do a combination of bus and train. Cap off your sightseeing on the 29th (Wed) early enough to go by car to Hengchun.

Hengchun

Located on the southern tip of the eponymous peninsula, Hengchun serves as the entry point to Kenting National Park, often attracting more travelers than locals with its tropical beach resorts and bustling night markets.
Visiting Kenting National Park and White Sand Bay will get you outdoors. Step off the beaten path and head to National Museum of Marine Biology and Aquarium and Scuba & Snorkeling. There's more to do: take in the spiritual surroundings of Fu'an Temple and step off the mainland to explore Sand Island (Sa-Dau).

Traveling by car from Hualien to Hengchun takes 4.5 hours. Alternatively, you can do a combination of train and bus. December in Hengchun sees daily highs of 29°C and lows of 20°C at night. Finish your sightseeing early on the 1st (Sat) so you can drive to Kaohsiung.

Harbor City

A small trading town in the 17th century, Kaohsiung now stands as a sprawling metropolis, its harbor representing the largest on the island.
Kick off your visit on the 2nd (Sun): get outside with Ai He (Love River) and then don't miss a visit to The Pier-2 Art Centre.

Getting from Hengchun to Kaohsiung by car takes about 2 hours. Other options: take a bus; or do a combination of bus and train. Expect a daytime high around 29°C in January, and nighttime lows around 19°C. Wrap up your sightseeing by early afternoon on the 2nd (Sun) to allow time for travel back home.
