Sigiriya

The historic rock of the same name dominates the landscape of World Heritage-listed Sigiriya, where the steep and striking lava plug contains the ruins of an ancient empire.
On the 18th (Mon), soar above the sights with a balloon tour, then contemplate the long history of Ritigala Forest Monastery, then contemplate the long history of Lankathilaka Image House, and finally delve into the distant past at Polonnaruwa Vatadage. On your second day here, steep yourself in history at Thivanka Image House, steep yourself in history at Gal Potha, contemplate the long history of Sathmahal Prasada, then explore the ancient world of Siva Devalaya (No 1), then contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Medirigiriya Vatadage, and finally see exotic creatures in open habitats at a safari tour.

Colombo to Sigiriya is an approximately 2.5-hour combination of train and taxi. You can also drive; or do a combination of bus and taxi. You'll set off for Kandy on the 20th (Wed).

Getting from Sigiriya to Kandy by car takes about 3 hours. Other options: do a combination of taxi and bus. Wrap up your sightseeing by early afternoon on the 22nd (Fri) to allow enough time to drive to Haputale.

You can fly from Haputale to Mirissa in 4.5 hours. Alternatively, you can drive; or take a train. Expect a daytime high around 38°C in March, and nighttime lows around 29°C. On the 26th (Tue), you're off to Bentota.

The coastal town of Bentota boasts a number of seaside attractions to draw in guests.
