Gateway to the Highlands

Inverness, often described as the Gateway to the Highlands, is a thriving commercial and industrial center.
Step out of the city life by going to Cairngorm Mountain and Cairngorm Reindeer Centre. Visit Urquhart Castle and Culloden Battlefield for their historical value. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Inverness: Kingussie (RZSS Highland Wildlife Park & RSPB - Insh Marshes), The Old Packhorse Bridge (in Carrbridge) and Aigas Field Centre (in Beauly). The adventure continues: learn insider's secrets on a distillery tour, explore the different monuments and memorials at Wardlaw Mausoleum, explore the activities along River Ness, and contemplate the long history of Fort George.

For ratings, reviews, where to stay, and tourist information, you can read our Inverness driving holiday planning tool.

Dundee to Inverness is an approximately 2.5-hour car ride. You can also take a train; or take a bus. Traveling from Dundee in September, you can expect nighttime temperatures to be slightly colder in Inverness, with lows of 9°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 7th (Mon) to allow enough time to drive to Golspie.
