The Gateway to the Great Barrier Reef

A neat, cosmopolitan city of shaded plazas and laid-back neighborhoods, Cairns serves as a popular base for exploration of the surrounding region and the Great Barrier Reef, as well as a center for watersport activities like surfing or waterskiing.
Your day by day itinerary now includes Atherton Tablelands as well as Josephine Falls. You'll explore the less-touristy side of things at Shark Diving and Opal Reef. Take a break from the city and head to Off-Road Tours and Crystal Cascades. Change things up with these side-trips from Cairns: Babinda Boulders (in Babinda) and Lake Barrine (in Yungaburra). The adventure continues: admire the sheer force of Behana Gorge Waterfall, don't miss a visit to Captain Cook Highway Rock Stacks, have some family-friendly fun at Cairns Kart Hire Track, and contemplate the waterfront views at Catch a Barra.

Located in the northeast of Australia, Queensland boasts a rich history, efficient cities, picturesque coastline, and lush interior rainforest. Tourism in Queensland tends to revolve around the Sunshine State's countless beaches and coastal enclaves, which engender a laid-back, easygoing way of life. Named after Queen Victoria, the state was first settled by Europeans in the 17th century, but the area is believed to have served as home to the country's Aboriginal population as far back as 60,000 years.
