Get out of town with these interesting Monterey side-trips: San Simeon (Friends of the Elephant Seal Visitor Center and Gift Shop & Hearst Castle) and Pfeiffer State Beach (in Big Sur). There's much more to do: get up close and personal with brilliant marine life at Monterey Bay Aquarium, identify plant and animal life at Wildlife Areas, take a memorable drive along 17-Mile Drive, and do a tasting at Wrath Tasting Room- Carmel.

For where to stay, traveler tips, maps, and other tourist information, use the Monterey trip itinerary planner.

Santa Cruz

— 5 nights
Santa Cruz remains synonymous with surfing, but this counterculture bastion offers plenty even if you don't plan to catch any waves.
Venture out of the city with trips to Rancho San Antonio County Park (in Cupertino), Skyline to the Sea Trail (in Saratoga) and Big Basin Redwoods State Park (in Boulder Creek). And it doesn't end there: get up close to creatures of the deep with a dolphin and whale watching tour, experience rural life at LJB Farms, enjoy the sand and surf at Mitchell's Cove Beach, and trek along Limekiln Trail.
