Kagoshima sits across the bay from Sakurajima, an active volcano that serves as a symbol of the city and works its way into many aspects of life here.
Kick off your visit on the 13th (Sat): take in the pleasant sights at Akamizu Tembo Hiroba, get impressive views of Sakurajima, explore the activities along Sekiyoshi Sluice Gate of Yoshino Leat, then go for a walk through Sengan-en, and finally take in panoramic vistas at Mt. Shiroyama.

The mountain town of Takachiho-cho remains a place of great importance to Japan's spiritual and natural heritage, and the point where these two things intersect.
On the 14th (Sun), take in the spiritual surroundings of Amano Iwato Shrine, go for a walk through Amano Yasugawara, take in the dramatic scenery at Manai Falls, explore the stunning scenery at Takachiho Gorge, then contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Amanomanai, and finally take in the spiritual surroundings of Takachiho Shrine.

Getting from Kagoshima to Takachiho-cho by car takes about 3 hours. Other options: take a train; or do a combination of train and bus. In June, daily temperatures in Takachiho-cho can reach 78°F, while at night they dip to 67°F. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 15th (Mon) so you can go by car to Beppu.

The hilly port city of Nagasaki has become known internationally as one of the two Japanese cities to be destroyed by an atomic bomb towards the close of World War II.
