The largest city on the island, Fukuoka formed through the merger of two former cities that had grown up either side of the Naka River.
Start off your visit on the 12th (Tue): see the interesting displays at Kyushu National Museum, then contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Dazaifu Tenman-gu, then explore the world behind art at Fukuoka Asian Art Museum, and finally admire the landmark architecture of Hakata Station. On the 13th (Wed), you'll have a packed day of sightseeing: let the kids burn off some steam at Ohori Park, enjoy breathtaking views from Fukuoka Tower, get engrossed in the history at Hakatamachiya Furusatokan, take in nature's colorful creations at Komyozen-ji Temple, then take in the spiritual surroundings of Kushida Shrine, and finally buy something for everyone on your list at Tenjin Underground Shopping Center.
