The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
Gion and Kinkaku-ji are good opportunities to explore the local culture. Appreciate the collections at Kyoto International Manga Museum and Kyoto Museum of Traditional Crafts Fureaikan. Take a break from Kyoto with a short trip to Asahiyaki in Uji, about 56 minutes away. And it doesn't end there: contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine, step into the grandiose world of Nijo Castle, steep yourself in history at Sanjusangendo Temple, and don't miss a visit to Nishiki Market.

Osaka to Kyoto is an approximately half hour train ride. You can also drive; or take a bus. In May, daily temperatures in Kyoto can reach 29°C, while at night they dip to 17°C. You'll have a few hours on the 6th (Mon) to wrap things up before traveling to Osaka.
